Description

AP Professionals has partnered with a growing food technology startup working to solve the biggest problems of health, access, and waste in the global food system. They are seeking a motivated, interdisciplinary individual to help complete assembly and launch production a new manufacturing facility in Rochester, NY.  The Operations Manager would have a range of responsibilities from line installation and optimization to overseeing product production. The position would serve a pivotal role within the organization, coordinating closely with the R&D, Food Safety, and the management teams to realize commercialization of new products and technologies. The Operations Manager must be dedicated and thoughtful with the creativity to tackle novel projects. They must hold attraction to the high-paced, multifaceted start-up environment, and enthusiasm to join the organization at this early stage.

Responsibilities

Oversee and manage completion of process facility:

  • Facilitate processing line equipment installation and optimization
  • Manage, coordinate, and direct all activities with external consultants, engineers, and contractors
  • Lead efforts with utility suppliers, environmental agencies, raw material suppliers, and secondary ingredient suppliers necessary for the completion of the facility and launch of production
  • Oversee trial runs in anticipation of go-live
  • Coordinate openly with the management team and participate in strategic decision-making.

Manage the day-to-day operations of plant:

  • Oversee and ensure production output, product quality, and on-time shipping and delivery
  • Build and manage a team of employees - including hiring, assignment of responsibilities, and scheduling – and foster an environment of growth opportunities and development, consistent with company culture
  • Provide effective training to your team to enhance performance; establish a safety-first culture
  • Develop meaningful, actionable metrics to accurately record quality, safety, and efficiency performance, and develop comprehensive plans for improvement against these metrics
  • Participate in the development and implementation of food safety and regulatory plans including assisting the Chief Technology Officer and Food Safety team with the build-out of food safety plans and associated production-level SOPs
  • Lead implementation of and ensure continued compliance to food safety plans, regulations, and sanitation plans; reassess adequacy of HACCP Plan continually and whenever any changes occur
  • Report food safety and quality problems to the food safety and management teams immediately
  • Identify field and plant problems for corrective action and ensure actions are properly carried out
  • Identify processes, implement improvements, and communicate on a regular basis plans that support the goals of the organization
  • Ensure materials, manpower, and equipment are utilized in the most efficient manner
  • Prepare milestone-driven plans, timelines, and budgets to ensure a focused, streamlined execution of projects
  • When needed, interface with the public, lead facility tours, and participate in conversations with customers and strategic parties as identified by the management team.

  • Identifies complex issues as they arise and provide recommended solutions to the management team; solve problems with a broad perspective to identify creative and innovative solutions
  • Ensure that appropriate communications take place by facilitating and participating in meetings, conducting regular team meetings, encouraging an open-door policy, and proactively seeking feedback from team members; foster an engaged, collaborative and non-competitive work environment by encouraging accountability, open communication, and teamwork
  • Ensure that the reputation and image in the community is consistent with company values, and that business relationships with all stakeholders are not compromised
  • Ensure that sound and safe business practices and processes are implemented and continuously improved to effectively and efficiently achieve ethical business objectives
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations while performing work assignments and adhere to all policies and procedures as specified in company manuals and as directed in the employee handbook
  • Proactively seek and participate in available company-sponsored training to develop and advance knowledge base and skill set
  • Stay up-to-date with latest production management best practices and concepts
  • Foster a work environment consistent with company culture: prioritize development, growth opportunities, accountability, open communication, and an entrepreneurial mindset
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management in a professional and efficient manner

Education

  • Bachelor's degree is required
  • Master’s degree or higher is preferred
  • Degree in engineering or sciences preferred

Experience

  • 5+ years of broad-based food manufacturing operations management experience required
  • Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma experience in a manufacturing environment required
  • Supervisory and/or management education experience required
  • Experience with potato processing preferred

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Comprehensive knowledge of HACCP, GMP’s practices, USDA and FDA regulations, GFSI schemes, SGF/PCQI/BRC and/or Better Process Control required
  • Demonstrated planning, organizing, goal setting, controlling, self-development, decision making, and presentation skills required
